Course Aims

The course aims to increase an implant dentist’s understanding of the skills required to perform a sinus lift and to demonstrate the correct use of the DASK system.

Course Outcome

At the end of this course, we would expect an experienced implant dentist to be able to safely undertake a sinus lift procedure using the DASK kit.

Course notes will be available on the day and lunch and refreshments will be provided for all delegates.

Pearls and Pitfalls from a Facial and Dental Reconstructive Surgeon

Who is this course for?

From the inexperienced dental surgeon and new graduate, to the well experienced, this course covers all aspects of implant dentistry including basics and advanced techniques. The teaching approach is tailored to the individuals previous surgical experience. This personalised approach in training means that everyone can gain from it. From simple techniques to ensure precision with tissue handling and reconstruction, to developing skills which hone surgical techniques with economy of movement.

What does the course cover?

The course covers surgical aspects of implant dentistry from flap raising, suturing, bone grafting, simple and complex, autogenous and guide bone regeneration using allografts and xenograft utilising simple cutting techniques to piezosurgery and blood constituents. A range of grafting material will be discussed and handled. From minimal access sinus surgery and Somers Lift, to open techniques including the DASK sinus approach. From immediate loading to early delayed and delayed approaches, single teeth to full arch considerations with ‘All-on-4’ techniques. Periodontal surgical techniques including connective tissue grafting, techniques to adopt in the high lip line anterior implant cases. I will summarise the pearls and pitfalls I have collected from 24 years of training as a facial and dental reconstructive surgeon.

Who is the course tutor?

Jag Dhanda is a UK trained dental implant surgeon with 24 years of clinical training including completion of both a medical and dental degree, basic (MFDS & MRCS) and higher (FRCS) surgical training and an advanced training fellowship in head and neck microvascular reconstruction. He has more than 15 years of dental implant experience with competency ranging from simple single tooth placement to complex dental rehabilitation, immediate loading, bone grafting and full arch reconstruction. Jag has placed more the 3000 implants without a single complaint case to date. He is very active in training dentists to place and restore implants as well as having a role as a trainer for future maxillofacial/head and neck surgeons in microvascular surgery and reconstruction.

What are the course aims?

  • To provide an understanding of the skills necessary for safe surgical practice including principles of flap design, flap closure and suturing techniques
  • To fine tune the surgical skills required for economy of movement during implant placement
  • To understand the importance of preparation for surgery
  • To consolidate understanding in soft tissue handling

  • To acquire skills in implant exposure with pedicled and rotation flaps
  • Introduce the principles of bone grafting and augmentation
  • To understand the principles of guided bone regeneration
  • To be familiar with the various bone harvesting techniques
  • To be familiar with piezosurgical techniques
  • To understand the various techniques used for bone preservation
  • To develop skills necessary for assessing and treatment planning complex cases for dental implant treatment
  • Introduce the principles of immediate tooth replacement and guided surgery
  • To have an understanding of the principles of advanced surgical techniques
